There are two major approaches to error analysis--- contrastive and non-contrastive.Not all errors are caused by the interference of the mother tongue and evidence of such can be easily found. Beginners of English often produce sentences like "He speaked English"and "I cuted myself". Some learners constantly miss the articles in English, and after they are corrected, they tend to overuse them. The interference of the mother tongue cannot satisfactorily explain these errors. It is more reasonable to say that the learner knows some rules of English but applies them in the wrong place. Thus in the first case the learner overgeneralizes the rules for the change of verb forms. We may say the error is a result of OVERGENERALIZATION（过分规则化） of the target language system. In the second case, the error can be called HYPERCORRECTION(矫枉过正),because after an error is corrected, the correction is wrongly used elsewhere.
